Information For Authors

General guidelines for those who wish to publish articles in Bókasafnið

Submission:
Articles should be submitted to the editorial board as an email attachment with a request for publication. The email address of the editorial board is [email protected]

Articles should be submitted in Word format or a comparable file format.

Length of articles:
The guideline for scholarly articles and general articles is 5,000–8,500 words, including footnotes but excluding the reference list and abstracts.
Other content, such as book reviews or memorial articles, should be shorter.

Abstracts and author information:
Scholarly and general articles must include an abstract in Icelandic and an abstract in English, along with an English title, regardless of the article’s language.
Shorter articles such as travel accounts, book reviews, and memorial articles do not require an abstract.
All articles, except for memorial articles, must include a photo of the author and a short biography including education and profession(s), as applicable.

Images and tables:
Images and tables accompanying articles should be submitted as separate attachments. Use JPG format or a comparable format for photographs and ensure high resolution, preferably no less than 300 dpi.
If the photographs were not taken by the author, information about the photographer must be included.
Images and tables should be saved with a number and title (e.g., Image_1_title and Table_1_title).
In the article text, indicate where each image or table should appear (e.g., Image no. 1 here or Table no. 1 here).

Formatting of articles

Font and layout:
Text should be left-aligned.
Font and line spacing: Calibri 12 pt with 1.5 line spacing
Use only one space after periods and commas.
Indented quotations should be in 11 pt font and without quotation marks.
Use Icelandic quotation marks and punctuation conventions for articles in Icelandic, and English quotation marks and punctuation conventions for articles in English.
Paragraph breaks should be indicated with one blank line, not indented text.
Use abbreviations sparingly.

Text formatting and quotations:
Italics: Used for book titles, journal names, and foreign terms used for clarification.
Bold: Only for emphasizing concepts or words.
Shorter quotations (three lines or fewer) should be placed in quotation marks within the main text.
Longer quotations should be in a separate line, 11 pt font, without quotation marks, and indented.
Headings and subheadings: These may be used, but avoid using more than two levels of section divisions.

References and citations:
To ensure consistency, authors are advised to use the APA style for citations and reference lists. Further information about using sources can be found at Ritver Háskóla Íslands and on the APA website.
